Elia Guariento
Hi, my name is Elia Guariento.
I’m an ecologist working as a researcher at the @Institute for Alpine Environment (Link: Institute for Alpine Environment – Eurac Research) at Eurac Research in Bolzano / Bozen (Italy).
I have always been fascinated by insects, and during my studies at the University of Vienna I fell in love with ants. I was fascinated by their ecological potential and encountered them everywhere during my fieldwork in Austria, Turkey, Costa Rica and the European Alps. For my master, I investigated their community composition and foraging ecology on the alpine tree line ecotone under the supervision of Konrad Fiedler. For my PhD, supervised by Julia Seeber, I worked on soil biodiversity, encountering some of the mysterious subterranean ant species. Since then, I have been involved in a biodiversity monitoring project (Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol), working more on butterflies. Recently, I was part of the consortium that won a brand new project (MonitAnt β Biodiversa +) to study the ecology of red wood ants across Europe. This has allowed me to focus more on the taxon I love most!
